20. The old Adlai Stevenson dilemma

Legend has it that during one of his unsuccessful runs against Eisenhower, someone yelled at Stevenson, “you have the support of every thinking American!” He is supposed to have responded, “that’s not enough! I need a majority!”

(many versions exist).
