You kind of have to feel like that is the case for Karolying.
You can try it at home: lie to your spouse about something small and then pray for a sign that it was wrong to lie. Be sure to be specific about the sign if you really want to get the greatest effect--like being struck by lightning in the next 10 seconds.
When it doesn't happen tell a bigger lie and pray again.
Eventually you will be convinced that everything you do is sanctioned by whatever power it is you are praying to since the sign never comes.
Take a lifetime of this and you have Karolying Leavitt.
