Having been on search committees for various levels of employees in universities, I can say that is indeed true. I don’t know if you’re even allowed to ask about nationality and immigration status. HR vets all prospective employees to ensure they are legally allowed to work in the US, but it’s never been a point of discussion in any committee I’ve served on. Mind you, virtually all international applicants already live in the US.
