40. We learn from sharing different points of view

I believe DU makes a good effort to maintain an atmosphere where we can have honest exchanges, and that is so much better than living in a Fox bubble.

And it is that selfsame bubble that is killing our society now, literally killing as of yesterday. We learned from Noem's own Botox lips that this guy has a history of excessive force.

There is strong tendency among elected Dems and their consultants to "play it safe, don't take the bait, don't take a strong position, don't let them pin you down. Lay low and we'll get through this. The system will right itself. Clearer heads will prevail." That might be good advice in normal times.

These are not normal times. We must think of this as if we are at war for the very existence of our democracy, because we are -- and we are losing it.

We can't just lash out randomly. We have to be smart about it. But this is a clear case where powerful action is needed and available to us. Being "Minnesota nice" is not the answer this time.

Here is Ellison on CNN: https://www.cnn.com/2026/01/08/us/video/minnesota-attorney-general-fbi-ellison-digvid

He ever-so-gently says he can do his own investigation. That is a baby step in the right direction,, but I would have preferred if he had come in with:

Look, we have all seen at least some of the videos. There are a bunch of them, and they all tell the same story. There is no question what happened here. There is literally nothing that needs investigation at the crime scene. We can and will look into the victim's actions at the scene. And we will dig into the killer's background as much as we can -- that would be much better if the FBI joined with us. But if they aren't interested in investigating then we will proceed without them. In the end, it appears this case will boil down to whether the victim posed any serious threat to anyone on the scene. Every indication from the video is that she was unarmed and attempting to remove herself from the confrontation when she was shot 3 times in the head at point-blank range. And let us be 100% clear. There is no legal basis for an officer or anyone else shooting into a vehicle in order to stop the movement of the vehicle or to prevent the driver from leaving unless there was a clear indication that the driver posed a mortal, immediate danger to others. That's the law. It looks very clear cut here, but we'll investigate before charging. I call on the FBI to join us in this investigation immediately and surrender the shooter to state authorities without delay.
