He's pretty much lost credibility as a trustworthy good guy with anyone who knows much about him. Unfortunately he still has a lot of power and influence, and some people who'd never use Grok because Elon Musk isn't a good guy want to believe Sam would never use OpenAI for harmful purposes, so ChatGPT is just fine.

There really aren't any heroes among the AI bros. Including Dario Amodei of Anthropic, as Gary Marcus pointed out yesterday:

I started following news about generative AI soon after ChatGPT was released at the end of November 2022.

In late February of 2023, thanks to a Futurism article, I read a 2016 New Yorker profile of Sam Altman which really set off alarm bells. See this OP and the replies:
