Iran's chief weapon in this war is the economic disruption it can cause by blocking the normal flow of traffic through the strait. If the U.S. blocks the traffic instead, it still causes economic damage, but takes away Iran's leverage in negotiations. It also cuts off a source of revenue for Iran.
