9. A number of Magyar's statements since his election have given cause for hope.

The major one for Hungary is that he declared his majority would alter the constitution to impose a two-term limit on his office. Orban would therefore be automatically barred from standing again, even if he stays out of jail (or worse if Putin's goons get hold of him).

Here are few more highlights:

Formerly, press conferences worked in a way that the propaganda media asked questions that were written for them by the government. We will now give the floor to those Hungarian outlets which are still independent.

In the last 16 years, our independent institutions have been seized. They disrupted the balances. However, we will re-establish this balance and oversight system.

I demand the resignation of the President of the Supreme Court, the Chief Prosecutor, the President of the Media Authority, and the President of the Competition Authority as well.

Sulyok should entrust us with the task of forming the government at the earliest and then step down from his position.

Everyone in Hungary knows that Ukraine is a victim of this war and no one should tell them under what conditions they should enter a peace or sign a peace treaty. We cannot tell any country to give up their territory.

And this is what the Fidesz politicians said. Then I would like to ask them: What would you do if Russia attacked Hungary? Which Hungarian counties would you be willing to give up?

Ukraine should receive security guarantees and territorial guarantees that can be observed and kept. Ukraine, under the Budapest Memorandum, gave up its nuclear arsenal for guarantees, but those guarantees were violated repeatedly by Russia.

I will not actively seek ties with Russia, but if Putin calls me, I will pick up the phone and ask him to end the war.

Hungary is a free, independent European country, part of the EU and NATO, and that is how we will act in the world.

We cannot change geography. Russia will still be there and Hungary will still be here.

So we must diversify our energy supply for security and lower prices. That does not mean cutting ourselves off, it means buying oil and gas as safely and cheaply as possible.

Is Russia a security risk? I think yes.

I'm not talking about the Russian people, the Russian culture, the Russian people, they are fantastic people.

But the Russian bear in Hungarian history, we felt it in 1849, in 1944, 1945, but in the 1920s, in 1956, and then they were here with us for a long time, so we know exactly what this is about.

Meanwhile, Hungarian Foreign Minister Peter Szijjártó, who'd been missing since the election result, popped up at the Foreign Ministry, where he was reported to be barricaded in with his cronies having a shredder party, focusing mainly on evidence of shenanigans around various issues regarding EU sanctions on Russia. Magyar said this wouldn't prevent his being brought to justice.
