escorting their own stuff in and out to their ports on their side of the gulf. Trump is claiming to be now blockading that traffic, not the whole passageway.
Far as we know, there may not even be any mines. If there are mines, Iran most surely does know where they are or they wouldn't be escorting stuff in and out.
My personal opinion is that he did this mainly in response to the rumor that china was sending air defense systems to Iran, but I'm sure he revels at the thought of also starving the people there at the same time.
