Many prehistoric societies were matriarchal. There is evidence the females were just as much the hunters as males in pre-agricultural hunter gather societies.
We have examples of female apes ganging up on abusive males and killing them.

So it may have been the introduction of "civilization" that made men in general the abusers they are today.
So just as racism teaches people to subjugate minorities, the patriarchy teaches men to subjugate women.
Without a controlling power structure neither would be as wide spread.
