He said "the communists" couldn't take him out and neither would the spider bite.

How that got twisted into blaming "the commies" for the bite is beyond me but it's very clearly neither what he said nor what he meant.

And it seems a lot of people didn't bother to read the article and just uncritically accepted the framing in the OP even though it made zero sense. There's a lesson there but alas, it's a very depressing one...
