Pope Leo did excommunicate members of SSPX, the Society of St Pius X, after they consecrated four new bishops in open defiance of the Pope's warning and pleas to turn back from creating a schism within the church.

Pope Leo is open to dialogue but absolutely firm on what he will not accept. The ultra-conservatives will be howling but the proclamation is clear:
