The Wormtongues, the Renfelds...it's a form of codependency.
They began in his service feeling as if they were rescued or accepted to be part of a "great man's empire".
He understood their greed and underlying needs, and was able to capture them by the feels, as it were.
T, DJ was, and will always be, their cult father; he and his needs are now part of their identity, no matter how upset or guilty they may feel about what he asks them to do.

No matter how much he emasculates them, belittles them, betrays them - even if they "escape" him for a while, he is their master.

I wouldn't trust anyone who stayed in his sphere more than the couple months it might have taken them to realize what he was and be repulsed.
And now that he's a glaringly public figure, I wouldn't trust anyone who even contemplated getting close to him in business or politics.
