Americans warned over coming price hikes [View all]

Rising prices have added to the strains facing an increasing number of households in 2026, while emerging as a key vulnerability for the GOP ahead of the November elections.

Inflation has accelerated to its fastest pace in years on the back of Iran war-related supply disruptions, and surveys continue to show dwindling faith in the country’s economic strength and mounting financial desperation among Americans.

And while progress in negotiations between Iran and the U.S.—currently in a state of flux—has seen fuel costs decline in recent weeks, analysts at the New York Federal Reserve believe another source of price hikes could be on the horizon.

In a report published Wednesday, economists at the regional central bank said that President Donald Trump’s tariffs could continue to prompt companies to pass the costs of these onto their consumers—despite the prevailing belief that the duties had already resulted in a “one-time” adjustment.
