Just because police officers have assaulted AfAm citizens for no reason doesn't mean that when I'm pulled over an AfAm motorist should feel threatened.

We're bad at intuitive statistics. We by default assume that what is know is all that's important to know. If we didn't hear about many AfAm deaths a year ago and hear about more this year, it can only be because there's a spike. Ignorance and innumeracy are often the basis for our conclusions. That goes for all of us.

We're defensive, so the "bad stats" assume outsized importance. That goes for all us.

We also justify and make excuses for those we empathize with or feel some solidarity with. It's an extension of being defensive. Our team is good, theirs isn't. This is what humans try to do naturally. All of us.

Everything said in this entire conversation has to be understood with those three things constantly in mind. Not just their side. Not just our side. Everything. We all have big mouths and little ears, and our brains are entirely dedicated to talking.
