The United States is restricting the import of animal commodities from Mexico after a parasite was detected in a cow in the southern state of Chiapas, officials said.

The cow tested positive for New World screwworm, a fly larva that burrows into open wounds and consumes living flesh, causing serious illness and often death.

The parasite usually infects livestock, and infection is rare in humans.

Mexico's Chief Veterinary Officer gave notice of the detection to the United States Department of Agriculture's Animal and Plant Health Inspection Service on Nov. 22, according to a news release.
