A coalition of civil rights and civil liberties groups are suing to stop President Trump's new executive order attempting to end birthright citizenship in the U.S. a right guaranteed by the U.S. Constitution.
Why it matters: The lawsuit filed late Monday in U.S. District Court in New Hampshire is the first of many expected legal challenges Trump will likely face in his new term following his early executive orders on immigration.
Zoom in: The lawsuit was filed on behalf of a couple who are members of the New Hampshire Indonesian Community Support, the lawsuit says.
The couple arrived in 2023 and are awaiting a decision on their asylum claim and for the arrival of a new baby. The mom-to-be is in her third trimester, the lawsuit says.
Under this executive order, their baby born in the U.S. would be considered an undocumented noncitizen and could be denied basic health care and nutrition, according to the lawsuit.
Catch up quick: Trump signed the executive order Monday just hours after returning to the White House.
The executive order is expected to face immediate legal challenges from state attorneys general since it conflicts with decades of Supreme Court precedent and the 14th Amendment.
