Trump simply showed them that the assumptions of friendship that have driven the close relationship are utterly contingent, and a responsible national policy would aim for diversification of economic relations.
I think Trump pushed them too far; while he can probably pull them back from war mode, he can't pull them back from some manner of decoupling.
