The area from just 15 miles up the road from Pgh, rt 28 the Freeport Area and up to Kittanning (Ki-tan ing - old Indian Name) got some 85 - 90 mph winds. They mostly followed the valleys that run Northwest to Southeast here. That channeled the straight line winds much as skyscrapers in NYC do and added speed and even more damage.
And yes, there was a tornado that actually touched down in 1985 at the corner of Rt 356 and Sarver Road. The tree that fell there is still beside the road against a steep hillside.
