Israel vows to hold Iran's leader accountable for "war crimes" after Iranian missile slams into hospital [View all]

An Iranian missile slammed into the main hospital in southern Israel early Thursday, wounding several people, causing significant damage, and drawing a swift vow from Israeli leaders of intensified attacks on Iran's military and "government targets." Israel's defense chief accused Iran of war crimes and said its Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei would be held accountable.

Israeli media aired video of blown-out windows and heavy black smoke pouring from upper floors of the Soroka Medical Center, but a spokesperson for the facility said there were no serious injuries to patients or staff, as the part of the hospital that was hit directly had already been evacuated.

About 40 lighter injuries, though:

"We have 40 injured people from people who were in the hospital at the time. The vast majority of these staff and patients are likely wounded from broken glass, falling ceilings, and other effects."

The Iranians have claimed they had a military target:

According to the IRNA news agency, the attack was aimed at an Israel Defence Forces (IDF) “command and intelligence (IDF C4i) headquarters” and an army intelligence camp in the Gav-Yam Technology Park.

But looking at a map, the Park and the medical centre are over a kilometre apart.

If that's their accuracy, then really they were aiming at the city. The defence minister is claiming Khamenei targeted the hospital, and wants to assassinate him:

Israel's defence minister says Iran's supreme leader, Ali Khamenei, "can no longer be allowed to exist" after the Soroka hospital was hit during an Iranian missile attack, according to local media and the AFP news agency.

Speaking to journalists in Holon, near Tel Aviv, Israel Katz reportedly said: "Khamenei openly declares that he wants Israel destroyed, he personally gives the order to fire on hospitals.

"He considers the destruction of the state of Israel to be a goal...Such a man can no longer be allowed to exist."
