The navigable portion of the strait is only a small amount of an already narrow passage. Iran has always had the plan of PHYSICALLY blocking it with sunken flaming targets as a last resort.

This has been known for decades and is the primary reason any sane administration has chosen negotiation.

To be clear, Trump screwed the pooch.
