They are also psychopaths. Psychopaths are not rational. They don't think clearly with or without other conditions like dementia and "old age," like many are claiming as legitimate excuses for his behavior.
People don't know what to think, I believe. So it's easy to shield oneself by either getting on board with the crazy or being totally apathetic.
There's also the phenomenon of the paradox of tolerance:

Imo, that why it's so dangerous to "go along to get along," like many are willing to do.
I deeply feel your frustration. This whole ordeal has been a real eye opener and psychically painful in that it can damage one's soul if you let it. The stress is certainly physically damaging.
