1. I'm going to argue with the contention that Biden staying in would have resulted in "certain defeat".

I think a lot of people are going to be surprised in November by the size and scope of Harris' win. It would have been closer if Biden had stayed in, but I just don't believe Trump would get the support he needed to pull it out. His disapproval numbers have been way too high, and yeah, I know, those are polls and they're pretty much meaningless, but really, I think Americans deserve more credit than that.

And maybe I am missing my guess, but what I'm seeing, among my friends and social media contacts, is an abandoning of Trump. I've cleaned some of them off, but there are many, 9 or 10, who were regular Trumpies in 2020, and they're not now.
