In the sense that we have the largest gap in wealth than at any point in the last century? It absolutely is about the economy. Only in the sense that neither party offered any clear cut, enthusiastic proposal of economic populism, which gave another huge opening for more authoritarian populism. In history, it appears that when authoritarian populism is an option, it will almost always win out except, when confronted with economic populism.
