The Lowest Moment in Trump's Presidency [View all]

Julie Roginsky

Mark this down as the most gruesome moment in a largely gruesome public life.

Donald Trump, high on the absolute power Congress and the Supreme Court has granted him, finally let the mask slip entirely this week when Time asked him a legitimate question: should Americans worry about retaliatory attacks from Iran after he launched a war against it?

For once, Trump did not dismiss the concerns of the hundreds of millions of Americans whose fates he holds in his hands. Instead, his answer was chilling in its indifference. Americans, he said, should “probably” worry about being harmed in a terrorist attack here at home.

“I guess,” he said, before adding the line that should haunt this presidency forever: “Like I said, some people will die. When you go to war, some people will die.”
