You'd think The Cisco Kid might have been based not on a well-known killer, but on, for example, the Mexican Vaqueros,
"The first real cowboys of Texas, vaqueros were Mexican cowboys who herded horses and cattle for hundreds of years." (Wikipedia)
The Cisco Kid originated in O. Henry's short story, "The Caballero's Way."
"In O. Henry's original story, the character is a 25-yesr-old desperado in the Texas-Mexico border country who bears little resemblance to later interpretations of the character.
He kills for sport, and is responsible for at least 18 deaths." (Wikipedia)
(I read somewhere that O. Henry once said that "The Cisco Kid" was based, in part, on John Wesley Hardin)

When I think about the Cisco Kid, a psychopathic killer like J W Hardin isn't really who come to mind.

Close but no cigar, Hark. That was the show but it was called something else.
