(3,354 posts)45. Our Buddy found us on Christmas night, 2015

It was a cold, dark night. My husband heard a sound at the door, looked out the door panes but didnt see anything. So he opened the door to see what it was and a small dog trotted in, barely sniffed around then jumped up on the couch as if to announce Im here now.
My husband loves dogs but had a broken heart after losing our previous dog a few years earlier, so he didnt want to keep him if we couldnt find his owner. We spent a couple of weeks trying to find his owner.I recognized a Godsend right away, but my husband was slower. But he just couldnt turn him over to a local rescue group.
He was a chihueagle (a beagle-chihuahua cross) and was a joy, outgoing, playful, but also sometimes melancholy. We learned months later that after a new baby was born he was considered too energetic to be safe around a baby. He was the elementary-aged daughters pup, but even she could see he was too much for a baby. So his family gave him away. But the couple who got him split up and dumped him with someone who lived nearby, whose nickname was Snake. Buddy decided he wasnt staying there and made his way to our carport.
In his last few years, he developed diabetes and soon after cataracts that left him nearly blind with incontinence. He passed last year after kidney failure.

That is tough. Hope this year brings you some peace, but understandably not easy.
