(13,371 posts)Working as teenagers because I was a poor single mom making very little and ex took off gave me nothing. I told kids I can afford basics but if you want more you have to work. Older one wanted a car and got job at copy place, was manager there by 17 and had a cute white convertible. Little one worked at clothing store because she didnt care to drive wanted good wardrobe. She got it.
They use to whine a bit jealous of their friends whose parents just gave them money until they got older and said they realize they have gone further in their careers than their friends because they have motivation and good work ethics.
But that said I have to laugh because both of them are spoiling my grandchildren and only one is motivated to work.
I remarried when youngest was 18 and we are doing ok financially. Makes me wonder if I had spoiled them would they have turned out the same? They were both determined never to be like their mom financially.
