and the Russian Orthodox church didn't have much ability to argue with Stalin when Germany invaded.

Here, the pacifist movement was huge and before Pearl Harbor even Lend-Lease was unpopular. After Pearl harbor, pacifists were suddenly traitors and even Quakers and Brethren were pressed into war duty.

As a Quaker, I don't agree with Just War myself, but it does deserve study.
