21. I have been reading a book entitled "The Middle Sea."

It covers maybe 5000 years of history of the area surrounding the Mediterranean. Just fascinating but very long (600 pages chock full of names and facts).

It really caused me to stop and understand just how brutal people have been throughout history. I am wondering whether, to rid the world of exceptionalism, we would have to change our DNA. It isn't just Europeans who believe we are exceptional. The Muslims who conquered all their neighbors, forced many nonbelievers (in their religion) and brutally massacred so many were just as bad. And then before them there was the Roman empire. Another brutal exceptionalist bunch.

I recommend the book. But it takes a long time to read it.
