I still wonder how he accomplished some of those "cartoon gags!" (As well as the real ones -- what physical courage!)

I think Buster Keaton was the best of Silent Film actors, followed by Charley Chase, Harold Lloyd, and of course Chaplin, each for different reasons. And yes, so many of the things he did were imitated by others for years to come.
