Syphilis is generally thought to have arrived in europe at the beginning of the modern era, most likely from the 'colombian exchange' resulting from the european conquest of the americas starting with Columbus. There is some evidence of earlier incidents, so the origin is not certain. What we do know is that the disease became widespread in europe duriung the early modern era.
