4. One take

Sinatra almost always recorded songs in one take. He hated to do retakes. He believed he could nail a song in one take.

When he first recorded "New York, New York," he messed up the second chorus. The song's music publisher, a long-time friend of Sinatra's, had to beg him to fix the second chorus. Sinatra finally acquiesced when the publisher offered to pay for the retake.

Funny story. The New York Yankees always play "New York, New York" at the end of their games. A sharp-eyed radio DJ noticed that when the Yankees won they played Sinatra's version but when they lost, the stadium's music programmer played Liza Minelli's version! When the Yankee's management were informed of this bit of musical humor, they decreed that only Sinatra's version should be played.
