It needed that smoky, raspy quality.
Back when this was a hit, MTV had Jackie DeShannon on to perform it (she wrote the song).
By that point in her life, Jackie's voice became that way, so I suspected Kim was chosen as the singer because her voice fit the mood Jackie had set.
I've searched youtube for that video, but have never been able to find it.
