Billy Gibbons was always a tone master to me. The others you mention had marvelous tone too, but there was something about the grit and crunch, but with no rough edges, that Billy got.

Tone was one of the reasons in like Knopfler until he bought a distortion box. That original Dire Straits tone of his was something to behold.
