At least two people are dead after a 6.4 magnitude earthquake impacted Northern California’s Eureka area early Tuesday, according to local officials. Thousands remain without power, and there are reports of damaged roads and homes.

The quake, recorded at 2:34 a.m. PT, was centered in the Pacific just off the coast, about 7.5 miles from the Humboldt County city of Ferndale, the survey said.

Local authorities have warned residents to be ready for aftershocks as damage assessments continue. There is no current tsunami threat associated with the quake, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration.
