Three occupants of a Tesla Cybertruck were pronounced dead early Wednesday morning after the vehicle crashed and burned in Piedmont, officials said.
Another occupant of the car was taken to the hospital with severe injuries, Piedmont Police Chief Jeremy Bowers said during a morning press conference. His department received an iPhone alert from within the vehicle at 3:08 a.m., he said, and officers got to the scene two minutes later and found the Cybertruck covered in flames. Firefighters arrived at 3:16 a.m., he said. The causes of the single-car crash and the three deaths are under investigation at this time, but speed was likely a contributing factor, Chief Bowers said.
Our women and men who responded to this call did everything they could, the police chief said at the press conference. It's devastating. But again, the devastation pales in comparison to what these families are dealing with this morning, the day before Thanksgiving.
The crash mangled the vehicle. Video and photos show it rammed against both a retaining wall and a tree on the side of the road. The front of the Cybertruck was crumpled, with a panel on the front-right corner almost completely shorn off.
The solo vehicle that was involved in the crash, there was another vehicle that came after it, that was following behind and came upon the vehicle as it was fully engulfed, the police chief reportedly said. The individual exited the car and was able to pull the person out, but the nature of the vehicle was a Cybertruck, and the heat was just too intense.
