A big rig carrying chocolate in the East Bay caught on fire Friday morning, causing hours of traffic chaos during busy commute hours.

The fire happened around 6:18 a.m. on westbound Interstate 580, near Grant Line Road, Tyler Hahn, a spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol, told SFGATE.

The blaze happened because of a mechanical issue, which first set the truck’s brakes on fire. The blaze then spread to the tires and the rest of the truck, Hahn said.

Approximately 30,000 to 40,000 pounds of chocolate were in the trailer, and nearly all of it appeared to melt, he said. A photo posted on CHP’s X account shows loads of chocolate oozing out of the truck and onto the road.
