Election error prompts lawsuit in Greenfield Union School District race [View all]

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. (KBAK/FOX58) — A tightly contested election in the Greenfield Union School District has sparked controversy after it was discovered that more than 100 ineligible votes may have been counted. Trustee Ricardo Herrera, who lost his reelection bid to Mercy Pena by just eight votes, uncovered the issue while attempting to address damaged ballots.

"I looked at the map and said something does not make any sense. This individual's address is outside my trustee area," Herrera said.

Herrera found that 108 voters who received ballots for the Area C race were outside the trustee area. He alerted the Kern County Elections Office to the discrepancy.

"What upset me towards the end is just that the county board of elections kind of dragged their feet," Herrera said, noting that the office did not acknowledge the mistake until a recent Board of Supervisors meeting. By then, the Area C race had been certified, prompting the school district to file a lawsuit for a special election runoff between the two candidates.
