Why Desantis Lost (From a Floridian's Point Of View)
There's gonna be a lot of reasons and a lot of people citing the reasons he lost. He misspent his money. He bet it all on one state. He's not a good people person. Yada, yada, yada. The real reason Desantis lost is he had nothing to run on.
-- What did he advocate for? What did he do for FL that he wanted to bring to the Nation? He created a police force that polices elections and voters and is responsible to only him. Can we all agree here that any police force used against voters that answers only to the governor is a less than wise way to ensure democracy? He went after Disney because they would not follow his anti gay crusade (and has cost the state millions of dollars in the court case which is still going on). He fired publicly elected prosecutors because they didn't seem to be hitting his culture war notes thereby telling voters that their votes don't count (and don't forget the police force to monitor voters). He yelled, on national TV, at students for wearing masks during the pandemic. He made it impossible for any local county or city government to use a mask mandate to help public safety.
-- Meanwhile Florida is under threat of a state crushing housing insurance tidal wave of costs that individual homeowners can't deal with, not to mention the hordes of insurers that have fled the state making it almost impossible to find insurance to begin with.
--- What has Desantis done? Nothing. Florida suffers from sky high utility bills. What has Desantis done? He authorized major increases in those bills.
Desantis solved no existing problems and lost millions of taxpayer dollars to his failed culture wars. He's the very definition of a GINO (Governor In Name Only). Even republicans saw this. And they ran from him in droves in Iowa, New Hampshire, and South Carolina. That's why Desantis lost. And that's why he'll lose every time...
