City of Angels ready to carry torch if Boston 2024 bid falters

Los Angeles is ready and waiting to grab the Olympic rings away if Boston’s bid continues to stumble — while a USOC official said yesterday the Hub’s claim to the games is not a sure thing.

“There’s no guarantee that Boston will be the city in September,” U.S. Olympic Committee member Angela Ruggiero told Boston city councilors. “Right now we need the strong support of Boston, but the USOC is in the phase where we’re hand-in-hand, we’re partnering. We want Boston to succeed, so we’re doing everything possible.”

Ruggerio’s warning came as politicians and business leaders in Los Angeles said they’re ready to pick up the baton if Boston drops it and move the bid for the 2024 Summer Games west. The USOC must submit its final candidate to the International Olympic Committee by Sept. 15.

If a last-minute switch is made, California state Sen. Bob Hertzberg said L.A. is ready.
