Their order, recognizable horseshoe crabs, dates back to the Ordovician 400+ million years ago. They've seen life colonize the land, the rise and fall of dinosaurs, the rise of mammals, and multiple mass extinction events, including the near "slate wiper, Permian extinction. Yet here they are. The common ancestor of existing species dates to the early Cretaceous. Beautiful creatures! 
Lets protect them as much as possible.
