0.50% for transit and roads, and 0.25% for housing. To provide a stable source of income with the most regressive of the major taxes.
Oh, it looks like Golden Valley is going to add a 0.25% city sales tax -- its first sales tax. So with that added to the metro area sales tax increase, Golden Valley will see a whole percentage point increase.
The last time I checked, about 5 years ago, consumption taxes and income taxes in MN were about the same dollar amount.
But people keep saying, oh, it's just a fraction of a penny on the dollar when talking about increases like 0.75%.
And then they keep adding a $6/month household tax on each of our utility bills - which is pretty close to a head tax. It was $2/month not too long ago.
(I got the New Hope number because I was at HyVees Monday, and the receipt shows the percentage they charge on non-food items like toothpaste).
Edited to add: Looking at another recent receipt, The sales tax in Golden Valley is also 7.525%.
