Second and likely final MS gubernatorial debate largely a dud [View all]

The second and likely last gubernatorial debate featuring both Republican Lt. Governor Tate Reeves and Democrat Attorney General Jim Hood was largely a mirror image of the first debate last week in Hattiesburg in terms of positions argued. With both candidates seated at a common table, it was generally less confrontational.

Broadcast live on television on WCBI and MPB and on radio with Supertalk, this debate did not have the same broad reach as the first debate conducted by the Nexstar family of stations.

In the debate, moderated by WCBI’s Aundrea Self, there were few if any surprises. Both candidates stayed on message for issues like teacher pay, Obamacare/Medicaid expansion, mental health services, brain drain, and workforce development.

Hood did make an issue of a Mississippi Today article that dropped just hours before the debate regarding Tate Reeves’ latest campaign commercial regarding education funding.
