House passes abortion repeal bill [View all]

Following some three hours of debate, the state House of Representatives voted 40-30 to repeal a decades-old law that makes it a crime to perform an abortion.

The passage of Senate Bill 10, which won approval of the Senate a week before, is a victory for pro-choice advocates who believe it is a woman’s right to decide what to do with her body, and for Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham, who backs the measure.

During a virtual news conference before the House began debating Friday, the governor, speaking as if there was no doubt the legislation would succeed, said, "It's time to get this done."

She is expected to sign the legislation as soon as it reaches her desk.
