5. Troy, Rensselaer, and Albany are the cheapest

Troy has a couple colleges, a vibrant makerspace, some fun restaurants.

Prices go up as you go south. If you need access to NYC then towns on the east side of the river have Amtrak service -- Hudson, Rhinebeck, Poughkeepsie, Rennselaer. Hudson is only 20% cheaper than NYC.

Beacon has a great rep.
Newburgh is high crime.
New Paltz is nice.
Woodstock is a Boomer tourist town but mostly charming.
