Attending football games for LEOs is generally down time when they could be performing other tasks such as patrolling or responding to other crimes.

However, there are the occasional incidents that occur at football games. About 20 years ago there was an incident that involved my high school team at the state quarterfinal game where the fans rushed onto the field and the coaches started fighting after the coach from the opposing team insulted the wife of the coach from my high school. Both schools were put on probation afterwards.

Throw the occasional belligerent drunk into the mix and I can see why some presence by LEOs is needed.
