At night I can hear KPOJ and KPNW in my part of California [View all]
KPOJ 620 is Portland's progressive talk station that's 25 KW daytime and 10 KW at night. For a few years before fall 2010 it was Thom Hartmann's flagship station, and Thom also co-hosted the KPOJ morning show with Carl Wolfson; that show preceded Thom's national show. Yet last night early during the 10PM hour I heard a few minutes of KPOJ's tape delay of Mike Malloy. Astounding how a 10 KW signal could travel 500 miles south to the SF Bay Area at night. I tuned into 620 AM again just now and heard a Portuguese language station from Hanford, Calif. (KIGS, which is only 1 KW and about 150 miles away) overtaking another faint signal (probably KPOJ).
However, KPNW 1120, a 50 KW right wing station from Eugene (where the U of Oregon is), interferes with a local Vietnamese-language station KZSJ 1120 at night. Although KZSJ's studio is in San Jose, its transmitter is in San Martin (25 miles south) and powers down to 150 W at night. That's why I heard Michael Savage's voice (he was talking about classical music not politics haha) with faint Vietnamese in the background when I tuned into 1120 just now. This KPNW station has the gall to brand itself "Newsradio" when it really just plays nothing but right wing noise (and the Portland Trail Blazers too!) all day long. I'm thinking about filing an interference complaint. Why the hell should a station out of Oregon interfere with a local community station?
