Luzerne County will have two drop boxes for Nov. 5 election; outside sites cannot comply with security requirements [View all]

Luzerne County will have two ballot drop boxes, not four, for the Nov. 5 general election, county election board Chairwoman Denise Williams announced Wednesday.

The two drop box sites not on county-owned property — Misericordia University in Dallas and Wright Manor, a senior living facility in Mountain Top — are not able to bolt the boxes to the ground or physically secure them, Williams said.

The requirement that drop boxes be physically secured to prevent theft or tampering is part of a resolution approved by the election board in 2022 and is also mentioned in guidance from the Pennsylvania Department of State regarding election security.

Ballot drop boxes will be utilized at two county-owned sites: The Penn Place Building in Wilkes-Barre and the Broad Street Exchange in Hazleton.
