The yard sign planted in front of Tom Rouse’s home in Hendersonville makes his views on the upcoming presidential election relatively clear, even as it doesn’t contain a candidate’s name: “Any Functioning Adult 2020.”

It’s enough to grab your attention if you’re driving by, and Rouse is happy to talk about it.

“The sign sort of started out as a joke, but surprisingly multiple neighbors come by and say ‘I like your sign,’ ” Rouse says from behind a mask.

Rouse is a middle-aged white man, and like many of us, he’s working from home these days. To the left of the beautiful home’s front stoop is a small koi pond. Some of the fish shimmering beneath the surface are 16 years old, Rouse says — they’ve been swimming in circles since George W. Bush was seeking reelection.
