Erwin mayor reprimanded for campaign signs in classroom [View all]
ERWIN, Tenn. (WJHL) Erwin Mayor Glenn White was recently reprimanded by Unicoi County Schools after handing out campaign signs to students in his high school government class Aug. 30 but official election-related consequences are unlikely.
White, who is seeking a second four-year term, told News Channel 11 in a telephone interview that a student had asked for a sign on behalf of their parents. He said he didnt know it was inappropriate to provide them one while on the job as a teacher, and that when additional students asked for signs he allowed about 20 of them to be fetched from his vehicle and brought into the classroom.
It definitely wont happen again, said White, who has taught school for 35 years and served as a Unicoi County commissioner prior to being elected town mayor.
White faces Erwin alderman Michael Baker and John Day in the mayoral election.
